Third period goals lifts men's hockey to road win

Box Score

The No. 3 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies used two third period goals to seal a 3-2 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars in Calgary Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Mount Royal opened the scoring at 6:50 into the second period.  Hunter Zandee fed a patient Jesse Lees on the blue-line. He danced his way past a few Huskie players and then snapped the puck bar-down on Taran Kozun.

The Huskies tied the game at 14:23 taking advantage of their third power play of the frame. Captain Kendall McFaull planted himself in front of the net and slapped in a one-timer to tie the game at 1-1.

John Lawrence was at the right place at the right time 4:52 into the third period to give his side a 2-1 lead. The puck went off the post and off Cam Lanigan to the top of the crease where Lawrence tapped the puck in. A second Huskie power play marker beat a tired penalty kill at 12:04. Alex Forsberg shot the puck past a sprawled Lanigan for Saskatchewan's third unanswered goal of the game.

Brad Kennedy pulled one back for the Cougars, slipping a rebound by Kozun but it wasn't enough.

Lanigan made 31 saves in the game for the Cougars, while Kozun stopped 27 in the win for Saskatchewan.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 10-2-1. Mount Royal is 6-6-1.

The teams will meet again Saturday night at 6 p.m. local
