CALGARY, Alta. – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's wrestling team opened the 2026-27 season in impressive fashion this weekend (Oct. 23 &n24), capturing the team title at the Dinos Invitational and a Duals win over the Dinos in Calgary, while the Huskie women earned a third-place finish in the Invitational.
The Huskie men totaled 46 team points Saturday to finish comfortably ahead of the University of Alberta (27) and host University of Calgary (21). The performance came one day after Saskatchewan also claimed the men's dual title, defeating Calgary 28-17.
Leading the way for the Huskies was a pair of individual champions.
Max Kershaw dominated the men's 68-kilogram division, finishing first in an all-Huskie final ahead of teammate
Nathan Kowal, who earned silver. The rookie also won his duals match, which featured an impressive suplex, finishing the weekend with 3 technical superiorities and 1 pin in four matches.
Saskatchewan also struck gold at 82 kilograms, where
Takis Sembalerus captured the gold, leading a strong Huskie showing that included bronze medalist
Ugwumsy Maledo and fifth-place finisher
Jared Steinley.
The Huskies added several more podium performances across the men's side.
Jackson Tomlin claimed silver at 57 kilograms, while
Deandrae Jabaybay earned bronze at 61 kilograms. At 90 kilograms,
Judah Arthurs fought his way to a third-place finish. Saskatchewan also received valuable points from
Ryley Bennett (fourth, 72 kg),
Layne Motley (fourth, 76 kg),
Cale Mohan (fifth, 72 kg),
Wynn Griffith (fifth, 57 kg),
Aiden Mitchell Riley (fifth, 100 kg) and
Ashton Bodnarchuk (sixth, 65 kg).
On the women's side, the Huskies finished with 20 points to place third behind Alberta and Calgary.
Myah Phillips delivered Saskatchewan's top individual result, winning the 83-kilogram title to open her season with a gold-medal performance. Phillips defeated Alberta's Vianne Rouleau in the title match, avenging her loss to the Panda in last year's U SPORTS Championship gold medal match.
Abby Wolff also reached the podium with a silver-medal finish in the 59-kilogram class.
The Huskies received additional contributions throughout the lineup, including fifth-place results from
Noah Remy (65 kg) and sixth-place finishes from
Sierra Mullin (53 kg) and
Myah Clatney (68 kg).
The season-opening event provided an encouraging start for the Huskies, with the men's squad claiming both the dual and tournament team championships while the women secured a podium finish of their own. Saskatchewan closed the weekend with three individual gold medals and multiple podium performances as the program now shifts its focus to a pair of non-conference events south of the border.
