The Canada West Champion HuskieĀ Men's Wrestling team will look to build off an impressive showing two weeks ago, when they claimed a seventh conference title, as they take the national stage this weekend. Ranked No. 2 in the nation allĀ season, the Dogs have their eyes set on the one team ahead of themāthe OUA Champion and three-time defending National Champion Brock Badgers.Ā
Separated by just 16 points in the national rankings, the Huskies and Badgers head into nationals with five wrestlers each holding the top-seed in their respective pools. Out of the 10 weight classes two feature Saskatchewan and Brock student-athletes atop both pools, setting up potential high-stakes clashes in the medal rounds. As the two title favourites, it will be crucialĀ for both sides to come away with strong results in the pool stage Friday before hitting the mats on Saturday with hardware on the line.
The Huskies are coming off their best result at the conference championships since 2016, when they last claimed the banner and recorded 53 pointsājust six more than two weeks ago. Five Huskies sat atop the podiumĀ in Edmonton in
Yuel Kebrom (61kg)āwho was also named the Men's Rookie of the Yearā
Donovan Neudorf (65kg),
Nathan Kowal (68kg),
Takis Sembalerus (72kg) and
Matthew Yong (100kg). Each one will be expected to produce once again as the program hopes to capture it's first national title.
On the women's side, the Huskies are looking to improve upon a 6th-place finish at nationals a year ago. The team is led by standout fourth-year
Myah Phillips who just earned her fourth consecutive Canada West individual title in the 83kg weight class. Last season, Phillips was one of two Saskatchewan student-athletes to come away with a U SPORTS medal, taking home bronze. This year Phillips is the lone Huskie to be ranked atop her pool.Ā
Action gets underway Friday morning at 8:00 AM (CST) from the campus of Lakehead University, with two pool-stage sessions being completed before the placement matches begin Saturday at 8:00 AM (CST).Ā
