Huskies Handle Provincial Rivals, Roll Past Regina to Remain Unbeaten

SASKATOON, Sask. – The nation's top-ranked team remain perfect in the 2025-26 season following a convincing victory over the No. 4-ranked Regina Cougars Thursday night (Jan. 29) at the Physical Activity Complex. In front of a raucous home crowd, a dominant second quarter saw the Huskies improve to 17-0 with a 63-45 U-Prairie Challenge victory.

The opening frame of the contest saw physical play at both ends of the court, leading to several fouls in the opening minutes. Despite the many trips to the charity strip early, the two teams remained in a tightly contested battle as neither was able to find their shooting form. Saskatchewan would build a modest 14-8 lead, with the majority of points coming from the free throw line, after one.

The game swung decisively in Saskatchewan's favour in the second as strong defence turned into offensive opportunities. Forcing eight turnovers the Huskies pushed the pace, outscoring Regina 23-5 in the frame before taking a commanding 37-13 lead into the half. The scoring run was also thanks to some efficient shooting, with the Huskies going 10-for-21 overall and 3-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Coming out of the break, the visiting Cougars showed plenty of fight looking to claw their way back into the game. Cara Misskey led the charge for the visitors, scoring 13 of her game-high 25 points in the period. Izzy Fust was a key contributor at both ends as well, adding eight points and two blocks as Regina outscored the Dogs 24-15 in the quarter.

Saskatchewan quickly reasserted control in the fourth, leaning on their veterans to close out the game. The Cougars were held to just three field goals and struggled from beyond the arc as the Huskies locked it down, securing the crucial victory.

The Huskies were led by Gage Grassick and Maya Flindall who each recorded a team-high 14 points. Grassick would add 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season while Andrea Dodig chipped in 11 points.

Misskey's impressive all-round effort paced Regina, as she added 11 rebounds and three assists while Fust contributed nine points, seven rebounds, and four blocks.

The two provincial rivals will meet again Saturday night in the Queen City, with tipoff at the Centre for Kinesiology, health and Sports scheduled for 5:00 PM.
