SASKATOON, Sask. - The visiting Calgary Dinos put together a strong performance Friday night (Jan. 23) on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court, defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 85-66 with a complete performance. The visitors set the tone early before building a commanding lead and improving their record to 9-6 while the Huskies moved 5-10 on the season.
Calgary struck first in the opening quarter, using efficient shooting and capitalizing on five Huskie turnovers to open with double-digit separation by the end of the frame. Aidan Smith provided the early spark for the Dinos, totaling eight points while
Easton Thimm fought to keep things close with six points and six rebounds.Â
Leading 25-13 after the first, Calgary continued to extend the margin. Producing quality looks while limiting the Huskies with effective defence, the Dinos nearly matched their first quarter output with 24 points. The second frame also saw the Calgary bench make their first impact of the contest, totaling 14 points with seven coming from Martynas Sabaliauskas. Despite the deficit Saskatchewan showed energy at both ends of the court, including receiving some timely three-pointers from
Dylan Miller and
Dillyn Morin. Despite the late surge Calgary continued to lead and took a 49-31 advantage at half.
Coming out of the break the Huskies responded with stronger defensive pressure and a renewed push offensively. Forcing turnovers and attacking the Dinos in the paint, Saskatchewan chipped away at the Calgary advantage. However, the Dinos answered, using second-chance points to halt any threat of sustained Huskie scoring runs. The visitors defence was once again the difference maker, totaling eight steals in the frame.
The fourth followed a similar pattern as the Huskies continued to battle early, finding some success from beyond the arc, but Calgary's depth and composure ensured there was no comeback attempt. The Dinos would close out the fourth with a 14-4 scoring run, securing the 85-66 road victory.Â
For the home team,
Easton Thimm was once again one of the best players on the court, recording a team-high 11 points and adding 18 for his 10th double-double of the season.
Dylan Miller added 10 points while
Treyvon Folkes finished with eight points and seven rebounds. In the Dinos, five players reached double-digit point totals with Aidan Smith leading the way with 16 and being followed closely by both Eli Djordjevic and Sabaliauskas who recorded 14. Starters Hayden Franson and Daniels Baumanis would each add twelve.
Saskatchewan and Calgary will return to the Physical Activity Complex tomorrow night at 7:00 PM to close out their weekend series.Â
