SASKATOON, Sask. - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies season will come down to final two weekends after suffering a weekend sweep to the Calgary Dinos at home. After an 85-66 Huskie loss Friday night (Jan. 23), the visitors earned a 95-74 win on Saturday improving to 10-6 on the season while Saskatchewan falls to 5-11. Despite the loss, the Huskies remain just one game back of the Lethbridge Pronghorns for a a playoff spot and will face off with the Regina Cougars (5-11) next week in a pair of crucial games.
Saturday's contest saw Calgary set the tone from the opening tip, jumping out a double-digit lead in the first quarter thanks to an impressive shooting performance in which the visiting team converted on 67% of attempts from the field. Led by 10 points from Daniels Baumanis, the Dinos secured a 29-17 first quarter lead. The momentum continued into the second frame where Calgary continued to display their efficient offence, however the Huskies countered with their best quarter of the night, shooting 52% and totaling 22 points to limit the Dinos from extending their lead.
After coming out of the break down 54-39, another tightly-contested quarter saw the Calgary Dinos continue to chip away at Saskatchewan, furthering their advantage with a 27-22 scoring edge. With the lead all byt out of reach for the Dogs, Calgary cruised to the victory with 13 points in the final frame.
The Dino's balanced attack proved too much throughout the night, with multiple players contributing on both ends of the floor. Hayden Franson led the way offensively with 20 points on an efficient 8‑of‑11 shooting, while Mrigendra Dhaliwal added 15 points, and four steals. Daniels Baumanis chipped in 14 points and six assists, and Daniel Chijioke recorded a strong all‑around effort with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks as Calgary controlled the interior.
Emmanuel Bonsu paced the Huskies with 22 points, while Easton Thimm recorded his 11th double‑double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Huskies begin their weekend series with Regina on Thursday (Jan. 29) at home before travelling to the Queen City on Saturday. Calgary meanwhile returns home to host the Alberta Golden Bears.
