Grassick, Reider Lead Dogs to 16th Straight Win Against Cougars

SASKATOON, Sask. - Back on their home court after a road win the night before in Regina, the U SPORTS No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies closed out Saturday's game with a 13-3 run to solidify a 70-61 victory over the Regina Cougars in front of a record-setting 3,058 fans in the Physical Activity Compelx.

Regina led 18-15 after one thanks to an impressive first quarter from Jade Belmore and Cara Misskey, but the Huskies would battle back early in the second thanks to a 9-0 run where the Dogs held the Cougars scoreless for two minutes of action. The scoring run, highlighted by a deep Gage Grassick triple, allowed Saskatchewan to take a two-point lead into the half.

Despite the Huskies stretching their lead early in the third, the Cougars would respond with a 9-point run of their own, taking the lead 50-48 before extending it to four points heading into the final frame.

In the fourth, the No. 3 team in the nation held Regina to just seven points while outscoring them by thirteen. Their 13-3 game-winning run saw 11 points come from the free throw line, as the Dogs were rewarded for their fearless play under the rim.

All-Canadian talent Gage Grassick scored a team-high 24 points for the Huskies, while Logan Reider followed closely behind with 18 of her own. Andrea Dodig would score five in the final regular season home game of her career while Anna Maelde led all players with seven rebounds.

The Cougars were led by Jade Belmore who recorded a game-high 25 points on 10-19 shooting. Cara Misskey meanwhile finished the game with 23.

The win extended the Huskies' unbeaten streak to 16 games and keeps the Dogs on-pace with the Alberta Pandas for first in the Canada West Prairie Division and the top seed in the postseason. Meanwhile the Cougars suffer their fourth consecutive loss and fall three games back of the Calgary Dinos for 3rd in the division.

The Huskies next action will come on the road as the team heads to Manitoba for a date with the Brandon Bobcats (2-16) to close out the regular season. The Cougars will return home to host the Calgary Dinos.

The Dogs next home action will come in two weeks time, when the playoff-bound team will host a Canada West Quarterfinal the weekend of February 21-23.

Following Saturday night's win the Huskies recognized their lone graduating senior in Andrea Dodig. Dodig joined the Huskies ahead of the 2019-20 season. Since then, she has been a staple of the Huskie lineup, appearing in 68 regular season games where she has recorded 363 points, 308 rebounds, 163 assists, and 145 steals. She has also played key roles in the Huskies postseason success and, with one playoff run remaining, is a three-time Canada West Champion (2024, 2022, 2020) and U SPORTS Champion (2020). An elite defender, she has taken the court 16 times in the postseason, totaling 67 points, 86 rebounds, 22 assist, and 24 steals. A four-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian (2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2023-24), Andrea also currently owns best single-season assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9) in Huskie history in addition to the fourth-best career steals per game (2.1) the program has seen.
