Dogs Tie Program Record in 116-40 Road Victory Over Brandon

BRANDON, Man. - Friday night (Feb. 14) at the Healthy Living Centre, the U SPORTS No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskie women's basketball team tied a program record with 116 points scored in a 70+ point victory over the Brandon Bobcats.

With a 116-40 final score, the Huskies tied the most points scored in a single game in program history, matching the record set on January 18, 1973 in a 116-17 Saskatchewan victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns. It was also the second time this season that Huskies have reached triple-digits, with the first coming back in November in a 100-28 win over the TRU Wolfpack.

The win not only made the record books, but it also continued the Huskies push for the No. 1 overall seed in the Canada West playoffs. Saskatchewan maintains pace with the Alberta Pandas for the top spot in the Prairie Division with a 17-2 record, and having defeated the Pandas twice earlier this season, the Dogs own the tiebreaker in the standings. The Prairie Division winner also receives the top seed in the postseason under the new playoff format, meaning a win tomorrow locks up home court advantage for the Dogs.

It was a trio of Huskies who led the team to the win, with Gage Grassick, Ella Murphy Wiebe, and Logan Reider all recording 20+ point performances in the win. Grassick once again led all scorers with 28 points thanks to an impressive 50% shooting night which included five triples. The All-Canadian talent also recorded five rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.

Murphy Wiebe would finish second in scoring with 23 points, a season high for the fourth year forward. She also led the game in rebounds with nine and added two assists and two steals in the win. Reider meanwhile recorded her fourth 20+ point performance this season, scoring 22 in addition to her four assists and three steals.

It was an overall efficient night from the Huskies, who collectively shot 54% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc. The play at the defensive end of the court was just as dominant, forcing 27 turnovers and limiting the home team to 27% shooting.

The two teams are back at it tomorrow night for the regular season finale with tipoff set for 5:00 PM at the Healthy Living Centre. Catch the playoff-bound Huskies on CanadaWest.tv, presented by BioSteel.
