REGINA, Sask. - The No. 3-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies went on a 12-0 fourth-quarter run to help give them a 67-61 road victory over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a U-Prairie Challenge matchup at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
Saskatchewan led 23-18 after one and built up a double-digit lead at one point in the second quarter, but the Cougars held the Huskies scoreless for the final 3:30 of the half. They scored seven straight points in that time, a run capped by a 55-foot heave by Jade Belmore at the buzzer which made the score 33-30 for the visitors at the half.
The Huskies led for the entire second half, though it was a one-possession game for much of the third quarter until Saskatchewan's big run to open the fourth. The Cougars went scoreless for nearly six minutes to start the final period, with Saskatchewan's
Gage Grassick hitting a pair of triples and scoring 9 of the Huskies' 12 points during that stretch. A three-pointer by Regina's Cara Misskey brought the deficit to seven with just under two minutes to go, but Saskatchewan got scores on its next two possessions to push the lead back up to 11 and seal the road victory.
Grassick had a game-high 29 points for Saskatchewan (15-2).
Logan Reider added 13 points, while
Courtney Primeau scored 9 and led all players with 13 rebounds.
Cara Misskey had a season-high 27 points for the Cougars, one off her career high of 28 that she set in a game two seasons ago at UBC Okanagan. Belmore finished with 15 points, while Izzi Fust chipped in with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
Regina (12-5) falls to two games behind third-place Calgary in Canada West's Prairie Division while the Huskies keep pace with Alberta for the No. 1-seed.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night in another U-Prairie Challenge battle, this time in Saskatoon. Game time is set for 5:00 PM at the Physical Activity Complex.
