This weekend in their home gym, the U SPORTS No. 6-ranked Huskie wrestling teams will look to continue a pair of impressive streaks and once again finish on the Canada West podium.

For the Huskie men, 2014 was the last time they have failed to finish in the top three, with their streak including two Canada West Championships (2020, 2016) and six runner-up finishes. Last season, the team earned a third consecutive silver medal following a two-win, 10-podium performance to finish 12 points back of the Alberta Golden Bears.

On the women's side, it has been nine seasons since the team finished outside the top three. Similarly to the Huskie men, the women also captured two conference titles in that time (2019, 2017) while finishing second on four occasions. At the 2024 Canada West Championships, the Dogs earned a third-place finish with a 41-point outing, finishing one point back of Alberta in second and just three behind Calgary who claimed the title.

This season, the Huskies will be looking to claim their seventh (men) and third (women) Canada West Championships and celebrate on their home mat for the first time since 2017.

Leading the way for the Huskie women's wrestling team this season has been third-year arts & science student, Myah Phillips. Phillips, who is the reigning Canada West Champion in the women's 83kg weight class, has been perfect this season, earning five first-place finishes throughout the 2024-25 campaign. The only student-athlete to capture wins in each open this year, Phillips will be going for her third consecutive Canada West gold medal this weekend. Also looking to defend their 2024 title is Sierra Mullin, another third-year athlete who earned a perfect open record this season with wins in the Dino and Huskie Opens. Finally, rookies Ella Gaudet and Kayley Clarke will be looking to impress in their first conference championship appearances. Gaudet is coming off a strong showing at the Lethbridge Open, earning her first career win in green & white while Clarke earned her first career win earlier this season in the Huskie Open and recently claimed bronze in Lethbridge.

On the men's side, a pair of veteran wrestlers look to lead the team to their first title in five years in Drake Buechler and Cole Sanderson. Buechler, a fifth-year arts & science student from Warman, SK, closed out the regular season meet schedule with podium finishes in four straight opens which included a win at home in the Huskie Open. Meanwhile Sanderson started the season with back-to-back wins at the Dino and Huskie Open before recently finishing third at the Lethbridge Open. Both wrestlers will be defending Canada West titles this weekend, with Sanderson looking for a third consecutive conference gold medal.

Action gets underway at 11:00 AM from Education Gymnasium on Saturday (Feb. 15). Tickets will be available upon entry and fans unable to attend can catch all the action live online at CanadaWest.tv, or on the recently launched CanadaWest TV app available on all Apple and Android devices.
