EDMONTON, Alta. - University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie women's basketball head coach
Lisa Thomaidis became the winningest coach in Canada West women's basketball history Saturday night (Feb. 1) after earning the 345th victory of her coaching career as the Dogs defeated the MacEwan Griffins 91-35 on the road.
Thomaidis, who entered her 26th season as the leader of the USask women's basketball program this year, surpassed former UBC head coach Deb Huband's record of 344 Canada West conference wins as the Huskies captured a dominant weekend sweep of the Griffins. Now owning a conference record of 345-161, Thomaidis adds the record to a coaching career which includes nine Canada West Championships and two U SPORTS National Championships.
In her 26-year tenure the Huskies have produced 20 winning seasons and earned U SPORTS Final 8 berths 14 times, including in 13 of the past 14 seasons. Thomaidis also owns program records for wins, playoffs wins, and U SPORTS tournament wins and has produced 33 conference All-Stars and 19 All-Canadians during her tenure at the University of Saskatchewan.
The six-time Canada West Coach of the Year and three-time U SPORTS Coach of the Year reaches yet another milestone in her Hall of Fame worthy coaching career.
In the record-setting win the Huskies produced yet another lopsided win, as the U SPORTS No. 4-ranked team in the nation extended their winning streak to 14 games.
It was another standout defensive performance from the Dogs, who held the Griffins to just 10 points in the second half, including a single field goal in the third quarter. Saskatchewan's relentless defence produced 26 turnovers, 16 steals, and held MacEwan to just three second chance points.
At the offensive end of the court it was another efficient outing from the nations most efficient team. The Huskies shot 49.3% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc while dominating the paint with 48 of their 91 points coming in close quarters.
The winning effort was led by All-Canadian
Gage Grassick, who put on a 26-point performance which included six triples. Grassick was followed closely by
Logan Reider on the stat sheet, who recorded 16 points in the win.
Courtney Primeau and
Maya Flindall would add 12 and 10-points, respectively, making it four Dogs in double-digits. On the glass,
Ella Murphy Wiebe and
Olivia Harm led the way with eight rebounds each followed by Primeau with seven.
The Huskies return to action next weekend in a U-Prairie Challenge double-header against the Regina Cougars. In what will be a meeting of two of the top teams in the conference in the 12-4 Cougars and 14-2 Huskies, the teams will play in a home-and-home series. Game one on Friday night (Feb. 7) will take place in Regina before the Dogs return home for game two at the Physical Activity Complex Saturday (Feb. 8).
