SASKATOON, Sask. – The defending national champion University of Saskatchewan Huskies picked up their ninth win of the season Friday night on the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court, defeating the Brandon Bobcats 84-51. All but two USask student-athletes got on the scoresheet in the victory, which also serves as the Dogs' 33rd consecutive victory dating back to last season.
Fifth-year guard
Anna Maelde recorded her first career double-double while
Maya Flindall totaled a game-high 17 points and
Gage Grassick added 13 in what was a true team win. The victory sees the Huskies maintain pace with the Alberta Pandas (9-0), Calgary Dinos (9-0), and Regina Cougars (9-0) at the top of the conference's Prairie Division while the Bobcats fall to 3-8.
In what was a slow start for the top-ranked team in the nation, Saskatchewan shot just 14.3% from beyond the arc in the opening frame. Defence however powered the Dogs to an early lead, as the best unit in the country held the Bobcats to just 28.6% from the field and four field goals.
Looking to get something going offensively, 11 Huskies saw the court if the first quarter, with Flindall and rookie
Isabela Jickling leading the way with five points each as the Dogs took a 23-10 advantage.
The second saw the Huskies quickly correct their shooting woes, connecting on 6-of-10 attempts from deep, with the reigning national player of the year leading the charge with three triples and 11 points.
For the Bobcats, Amaya Mcleod recorded a team-high 7 points in a stronger shooting performance from Brandon. However, the Bobcats could once again not keep pace and entered the locker room trailing 48-23.
The third saw a highly efficient stretch from Brandon, who went 3-of-4 from deep and shot 41.7% from the field looking to capitalize on another slow Huskie quarter. Going 6-of-22 from the field, Flindall once again finished as the Dogs' leading scorer, recording nine points.
Saskatchewan's rebounding once again proved to be the deciding factor, as the Huskies doubled the Bobcat's total and narrowly outscored the visitors 18-16.
Anna Maelde led the Huskies in the fourth as the home team closed things out. The Moose Jaw product totaled eight points on 3-of-3 shooting and added three rebounds to secure the first double-double in her green & white career.
The Huskies and Bobcats will return to Physical Activity Complex tomorrow night to close out their weekend series and Canada West action prior to the Christmas break. Tipoff is set for 5:00 PM CST.
