SASKATOON, Sask. -
Misgana Killoh scored the lone Saskatchewan goal in added time, but it would prove to be too little too late for the home team as Huskie Men's Soccer team was officially eliminated from playoff contention after playing to a 1-1 draw with the Alberta Golden Bears Friday night (Oct. 17) at Griffiths Stadium.
Coming into Friday night's contest, which served as the 2025 Bateman Cup, the Huskies needed a victory by three or more goal over the Golden Bears to keep their playoff hopes alive but a stifling Alberta defence held the Dogs scoreless until the final moments. Saskatchewan now stands at 3-7-3 with one game remaining in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Bears move to 5-5-3 on the season and clinch a playoff berth.
From the opening minutes it was clear that the visiting Golden Bears were not planning on taking the Huskies lightly, pushing the pace and looking to take the early advantage. Despite the early pressure, the Huskie defence would hold strong, thanks in part to the play of fourth-year goalkeeper
Jaron Slopinski would record four saves by the final whistle.
After a scoreless first half it took Alberta just over ten minutes to register the games first goal. In the 56th minute Frankroy Cain found Habib Assem for his fourth of the season and a heartbreaking goal for home team. The score followed a flurry of chances from the visiting team, who were finally rewarded after several minutes of pressure.
Despite the Huskie aggression increasing, Alberta held the Huskies scoreless through the regulation. The Golden bear defensive play was led by keeper Trystan Read who went on to finish the match with five saves.
In added time, the Huskies finally caught a break.
Tao Hein sent a long pass to
Misgana Killoh streaking up the right sideline who had just enough time to chip the ball over a diving Read for the tying score.
Following Friday's draw, the Huskies will return to the pitch Sunday afternoon (Oct. 19) to close out their 2025 regular season against the MacEwan Griffins.Â
