Looking Ahead
The week seven clash between the Huskies and Thunderbirds will see two programs looking to accomplish very different objectives late in the campaign. The Huskies, currently riding a three-game winning streak, will be looking to maintain their lead in the Canada West standings while the T-Birds are looking to get back on track after suffering back-to-back losses to the Alberta Golden Bears and Manitoba Bisons.
Serving as the second meeting between the two teams this season, the Huskies previously defeated UBC 51-14 at Griffiths Stadium in a week two contest which saw Saskatchewan record 613 yards of total offence.
In their most recent action, the Huskies earned a hard-fought 31-24 win at home over Alberta thanks to an impressive performance from back up quarterback
Jake Farrell who led the offence on a game-winning touchdown drive with just over a minute remaining. Standouts
Ryker Frank and
Daniel Wiebe also contributed heavily in the win, with Frank recording 128 total yards and a touchdown while Wiebe added 100 yards receiving and a score of his own. The contest also saw the Saskatchewan defence record one of their best outings of the season, forcing three timely turnovers and recording a trio of sacks.
The Thunderbirds meanwhile are coming off a narrow road loss in Manitoba which saw the team fall behind 28-3 before storming back with 28 unanswered points. The Bisons would eventually secure the win though with a late touchdown to drop the T-Birds to 2-4 on the season.
Friday night's game not only sees a lopsided matchup by record, but also statistically with the top-ranked Saskatchewan offence set to go head-to-head with a struggling UBC defence. The Huskies are averaging 33 points and 463.7 yards per game through six games while the T-Birds have allowed 32 points and nearly 500 yards per outing. The Dogs also rank as one of the best defensive units in Canada West, surrendering the second-fewest points per game (20.2) thanks in large to the production of the defensive line who have produced a conference-leading 13 sacks. Meanwhile the UBC offence, while coming off a strong performance, has produced just 21.2 points per game and a conference-low 366.7 yards per game.
