Huskies Remain Alive in Playoff Race Following 0-0 Draw With Lethbridge

SASKATOON, Sask. – In a crucial game for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night (Oct. 10), the team played to a 0-0 stalemate with the Lethbridge Pronghorns at Griffiths Stadium.

In what was just their second draw of the season, the Huskies move to 3-7-2 on the season and remain in fifth-place in Canada West's Prairie Division, trailing the Alberta Golden Bears for the final playoff spot. While the result might not have been what the team was hoping for, it does keep the Dogs alive in the postseason race after the MacEwan Griffins defeated the Golden Bears 1-0 in Edmonton.

Friday night's game also sets up a pair of must win games for the Huskies to close out the regular season, needing two wins and two losses from Alberta to qualify for the playoffs.

For the pronghorns, the tie moves the team to 4-3-5 on the season with two games remaining.

Early in the match it was clear the Huskies wanted the all-important victory, pushing the pace and registering several strong scoring chances in the opening minutes. It was Ethan Cabral who recorded the games first chance, followed shortly by another one from Tao Hein but both failed to hit their targets.

Despite the pressure from Saskatchewan, Lethbridge was able to answer with chances of their own and forced Jaron Slopinski to make an early save off a corner kick. With an 11th career clean sheet, Slopinski tied the Huskies' all-time program record, pulling even with former USask keeper Diakiw.

As the Huskies continued to make life difficult for the visiting team late in the frame with a pair of chances from Ty Lee, the Pronghorns held firm thanks in part by the play of keeper Tegan Romaine. Romaine went on to finish the night with seven saves for the clean sheet.

Coming out for the second half, Saskatchewan once again pushed the pace early with Jackson Kovitch recording his first chance of the evening.

As the half progressed, defensive play picked up as both back lines kept things to the edges of the pitch and out of danger.

In the 75th minute Kovitch recorded the best chance of the match after redirecting a ball with his head and forcing Romaine to come up with another crucial save.

Then in the final minutes the Huskies were once again back on the attack before Killoh was taken down just outside the box, setting the Huskies up with a nice look but Malcolm Rektor's shot would go wide and out of play.

The Pronghorns would all but seal the scoreless draw in added time, taking the ball deep in Saskatchewan territory before killing off precious seconds.

The Huskies next action comes in a week's time, with the Dogs set to host the Alberta Golden Bears Saturday, October 18 in the 2025 Bateman Cup before taking on the MacEwan Griffins Sunday (Oct. 19) in back-to-back must-win contests.
