GUELPH, Ont. - This past weekend, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie wrestling team made a trip east to take part in the Guelph Open at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre on Sunday, January 19, 2025.

In just the second-last event remaining for the Huskies before the 2025 Canada West Championships on their home mat, the Dogs were in Ontario looking to rebound following the Golden Bear Invitational last week.Â
One student-athlete on both the men's and women's side led the way in Guelph with
Myah Phillips and
Drake Buechler earning podium finishes.Â
Myah Phillips, a third-year arts & science student, captured gold in the women's 83kg weight class. The local product of Saskatoon went 2-0 on her wat to the top spot on the podium, defeating McMaster's Vanessa Fonrose by technical fall 11-0 before taking down Western's Paige Baynham, alo by technical fall, 12-0 to guarantee herself a medal finish. In the final match, Phillips claimed gold by decision 13-4 over Adrian College's Mia Gaetjens.Â
On the men's side,
Drake Buechler claimed bronze in the men's 61kg weight class thanks to a record of 4-1. A fifth-year student from Warman, SK, Buechler Western's Leo Kitambala and McMaster's Adrian Winger by fall before suffering his only loss of the day to Toshihiro Hasegawa of the London-Western Wrestling Club, who earned the win by technical fall 10-0. The loss did not keep Buechler down long however, as the arts & science student rebounded with win by fall over McMaster's Tin Dao before claiming the final spot on the podium with another win by fall, this time over Cooper Feke of the Host Guelph Gryphons.Â
Other highlights from the Guelph Open include a pair of sixth-place finishes from
Taebyn Tulp and
Aleksander Eisler in the women's 76kg and men's 97kg weight classes.Eisler posted a record of 2-1 with wins by fall and technical fall 13-1 while Tulp went 1-2, falling to Brock's Cassie Corbett by technical fall 10-0 in the fifth-place match.Â
The Huskies now look towards their final meet of the regular season prior to the conference championships, the Lethbridge Open set to take place on Jan. 24 & 25 at First Choice Savings Centre.Â
