Huskies Looking for Revenge Against No. 9-Ranked Golden Bears
The Dogs will be looking for some measure of revenge against the U SPORTS No. 9-ranked Alberta Golden Bears this week after suffering three losses, including one in the Canada West semifinals, to their rivals from Edmonton in 2023. Alberta currently sits 2nd in the conference with a 2-2 record and is coming off a lopsided 30-6 win over the Regina Rams in Week 4. Prior to their win over the Rams, the Bears had lost two straight to Calgary and Manitoba following a season-opening win over UBC. For the Huskies, they're hoping a return to Griffiths results in a return to the win column as they enter Week 5 with a 1-3 record.
Despite their record, the Dogs' offence continues to be one of the most productive in the conference, ranking first in points per game (30.0) and second in total yards per game (443.3). Just one reason for the offence success is the production of one of the best quarterback-receiver duos in the country, in
Anton Amundrud and
Daniel Wiebe. The pair have connected on 27 occasions for 468 yards and five scores, all conference-highs, while averaging 17.3 yards per reception. On the ground,
Ryker Frank continues to lead the way for the Huskies with 372 rushing yards and four majors on the season. Saskatchewan has also received plenty of production from running back
Kayden Miller who is averaging 7.2 yards per carry and is coming off his best performance of the season.
Offensively, the Huskies should see plenty of opportunities going up against a defence giving up the third-most points per game and over 360 yards of offence. The Golden Bears also allow more first downs than any team in the conference, averaging 26 per game,
On the other side of the ball, the Huskie defence is set to face one of its toughest challenges of the season Friday, with a stout running back duo set to visit Saskatoon. Alberta's Matthew Peterson and Ope Oshinubi make up the conference's best rushing attack, averaging a combined 216.5 on the ground. Huskie fans are sure to be all too familiar with Peterson who went for totals of 191, 168, and 73 against the Dogs last season. The Saskatchewan secondary will also be keeping an eye on quarterback Eli Hetlinger who's averaging 184 yards per game.
The task to slow down the Alberta rushing attack will be left to the Huskie linebacking corps made up of veteran linebackers
Seth Hundeby,
Jayden Engel,
Zach Zary, and
Lane Novak. Hundeby currently leads the group with 20 total tackles this season, followed by Engel (16.5), Zary (11.5), and Novak (9.0). Rookie defensive lineman
Riece Kack will also be tasked with help limit the ground game. Kack has been excellent in freshman season, recording 15 tackles including 1.5 for a loss, and a pass break up.
A crucial matchup for both teams with just a single meeting this season, a win would go a long way in the pursuit of the postseason.
