LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - In a decisive matchup at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium, the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns, securing a commanding 6-0 victory. The Huskies, ranked fourth in the Canada West conference, quickly set the tone for the match scoring in the 27th minute. Following that, they scored two more goals in the first half, leaving the Pronghorns with a steep hill to climb. Despite some spirited attempts to rally and strong play from goalkeeper Oceane McBurney, Lethbridge was unable to find the net, while Saskatchewan continued to extend their lead.
In the 27th minute, the Huskies struck first, capitalizing on an unfortunate own goal by Lethbridge.
Just 30 seconds later,
Taryn Izsak found the net for the Huskies, with an assist from
Nammi Nguyen, extending the lead.
The 38th minute saw Izsak score again, earning her second goal of the game, this time also assisted by Nguyen.
Despite their efforts, the Pronghorns faced a daunting challenge at halftime, trailing by three goals.
As the second half kicked off, Pronghorns coach Thiago Bastos made key substitutions in hopes of igniting a comeback.
In the 63rd minute, the Huskies added to their tally when
Tia Lecox scored, assisted by
Jenna Steacy, pushing the lead further.
The Pronghorns had a prime opportunity in the 46th minute as Nicola Hutten aimed to put Lethbridge on the scoreboard but was unable to convert.
In the 79th minute, the Horns pressed hard, looking to capitalize on a Huskies mistake, but Hutten's follow-up chance went begging.
The Huskies struck again soon after, with
Madison Mayert netting an unassisted goal off a rebound from the post, marking her second goal of the Canada West season.
The Pronghorns continued to battle until the final whistle, with Viktoria Birglechner making several promising touches, yet again unable to find the net.
Tia Lecox capped off the match with a final goal before the 90-minute mark, solidifying the Huskies' resolve.
Despite the scoreline, Oceane McBurney's performance was noteworthy, as she delivered a series of crucial saves throughout the game.
