SASKATOON, Sask. – Friday night (Sept. 20) at Griffiths Stadium the Saskatchewan Huskies suffered a 2-0 loss to the U SPORTS No. 2-ranked UBC Thunderbirds. The visiting Thunderbirds managed to escape with the win thanks to two quick scores in the 26
th and 28
th minutes in an otherwise tightly contested match. With the win, the Thunderbirds maintain their unbeaten record and improve to 5-0-2 while the Huskies drop to 2-6 just past the midway point of the season.
After the matched opened with both teams trading possession, the Thunderbirds began pressing the attack. The pressure eventually broke through in the 26
th minute when UBC forward Henry Godbout opened the scoring.
With momentum in their favour, UBC capitalized, extending their lead to 2-0 after Chris Lee beat Huskie goalkeeper
George Arnold.
Arnold, a transfer from Durham University in England, made his first start in green and white Friday night. The 6-foot-2 keeper produced a strong performance despite the final score, facing 13 shots and coming up with eight saves.
Leading by two to start the second half, the Thunderbirds continued to press the attack in search of a third score.
The Huskies defence would hold however, limiting high-danger chances as Arnold continued his stellar play in goal.
After a red card to Noah Hrdlicka left the visiting Thunderbirds shorthanded, the Huskies attempted to seize the advantage.
Their best scoring chance of the match came in the 77
th minute when
Kiran Baker was unable to capitalize on a wide open UBC net.
The UBC defence would hold for the remainder of the match, earning a narrow victory over the Huskies.
