Huskies Make Home Debut in 2024 Homecoming Game

For the first time in 318 days the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (0-2) are set to take the field at Griffiths Stadium in Nutrien Park for regular season Canada West action. On Friday, September 13 the Dogs will host the Calgary Dinos (1-1) and not only make their 2024 home debut, but also do so in front of a Homecoming crowd. Last year, the Huskies hosted the Regina Rams in front of a sold-out crowd of over 10,000 strong which featured a 40-6 rout of the visiting Rams. Last season the Dog's defeated the Dinos 28-12 in Calgary before falling in a tightly-contested game 13-12 at home.

The Huskies enter Friday's game coming off a hard-fought 33-28 loss to the Rams last week in the first event of the U-Prairie Challenge, and the first Saskatchewan showdown between the two teams this season. Despite an impressive first half that featured a blocked punt turn into a scoop-and-score, three offensive touchdowns, and two fumble recoveries from the Huskies, Saskatchewan was shutout in the second half and surrendered 10 unanswered points to fall to 0-2 to begin the season. The game saw fourth-year receiver Daniel Wiebe continue to establish himself as Anton Amundrud's favourite target in 2024, as the veteran pass catcher totaled 103 yards and two touchdowns on five catches. With another standout performance, Wiebe continues to rank among the nations top receivers with 307 yards (2nd in U SPORTS) and 3 touchdowns (T-2nd in U SPORTS). His quarterback, second year starter Anton Amundrud, has also impressed on the stat sheet among U SPORTS competition. Amundrud ranks 4th in passing yards per game (295.5) and 3rd in passing touchdowns (4). Running back Ryker Frank also saw an increase in production against the Rams, carrying the ball 17 times for 64 yards and a major.

Defensively, the Huskies will look to continue their aggressive play which resulted in a trio of turnovers in Regina. Jayden Engel, Katley Joseph, and Tasmin Smith-Windsor all recovered fumbles for Saskatchewan last Friday night, with an additional two fumbles from the home team being forced but not recovered. The green & white defenders will also be looking for a repeat performance in the run game after limiting the Rams to just 86 yards on the ground and 3.9 yards per carry.

Shifting their focus to Calgary, the Huskie defence will look to take advantage of a struggling Dino offence. Calgary quarterback Dom Britton is averaging 206 yards per game and completing just 42% of his passes while also owning a 2-4 Touchdown-interception ratio through two games. On the ground, the Dinos are averaging just 64.5 yards per game and 3.1 yards per attempt and have yet to score a rushing touchdown this season.

On the other side of the ball the Dinos are coming off an explosive performance against the U SPORTS No. 9-ranked Alberta Golden Bears. In a 36-22 win over the Bears last week, the Calgary defence picked Alberta quarterback, Eli Hetlinger, off three times in the first half, taking all three interceptions to the endzone for majors. Despite the Alberta miscues the Bears still managed to out-gain the Dinos 360 to 217 total yards, which included 241 through the air.

Friday's showdown between the Huskies and Dinos will be the first of two meetings this season, with the second coming in the final week of the regular season.
