Dogs Win Huskie Duals; Men Finish 1st, Women 3rd at Huskie Open

SASKATOON, Sask. - Huskie Wrestling was in action this past weekend on their home mats, hosting the Huskie Duals Friday night (Nov. 29) followed by the Huskie Open (Nov. 30) on Saturday. It was a strong weekend for the Dogs, who captured the win at the Huskie Duals before earning podium positions in both the men's and women's team standings at the Huskie Open. 
 

HUSKIE DUALS - 54-34 vs Calgary Dinos/Guelph Gryphons - RESULTS

The Huskies earned a 54-34 win at the Huskie Duals in Education Gymnasium as the Dogs took on members of the Calgary Dinos and Guelph Gryphons, with wrestlers from the Lethbridge Pronghorns also taking part in select weight classes. 

On the women's side Saskatchewan saw Myah Phillips and Sierra Mullin earns wins to help the Dogs. Phillips, a third-year arts & science student, defeated Lethrbidge's Brydget Dearling by superiority in the 83kg weight class with a score of 10-0. Mullin also captured a victory by superiority, taking down Maya Johnston of the Calgary Dinos 10-0. 

For the Huskie men, 10 different student-athletes earned wins with Cole Sanderson taking the first match of the night over Guelph's David Chong by superiority 10-0. Ashton Bodnarchuk, Drake Beuchler, Lulius Cojocaru, Simon Trokhymchuk, and Judah Arthurs also earned superiority wins, defeating Cameron Workman, Cooper Feke, Brenna Laplante Brady, Jayden Harris, and David Hurst Jr. of the Gyuelph Gryphons. Matthew Yong, Donovan Neudorf, and George Ren meanwhile, won their matches by fall. Finally, Owen McGillivray helped the Dogs capture the win with a victory by points over Mitch Schechinger. 

A total of 19 Saskatchewan student-athletes took the mat, with 13 from the Huskie men's team and 6 from the women's.

HUSKIE OPEN - Men 1st-Place, Women 3rd-Place - RESULTS

The Huskie open saw the Saskatchewan men's team build on a strong Friday night, finishing as the top team among representatives from 14 different wrestling teams and clubs. 

Seven Huskies finished on the podium with Drake Beuchler, Cole Sanderson, and Iulius Cojocaru capturing gold medals in the 61kg, 76kg, and 100kg weight classes. Judah Arthurs would also earn a top-three finish in the 82kg weight class claiming bronze along with George Ren who finished 3rd in the 90kg weight class, and Wyatt Newsham who followed suit in the 125kg weight class. Matthew Young would round things out with bronze in the 90kg weight class.

On the women's side, Sierra Mullin, Kayley Clarke, Aida-Lyn Jones, and Myah Phillips led the Dogs to a bronze medal finish in the team standings. Mullin (53kg), Clarke (62 kg), and Phillips (83kg) all earned 1st-pace finishes while Jones captured bronze in the 68kg weight class. The Calgary Dinos would take the top spot as a team with 58 points.

The Huskies will return to the mats in their home gym on Saturday, February 15, 2025 when the University of Saskatchewan plays host to the top talent from around the conference in the 2025 Canada West Wrestling Championships.
