KAMLOOPS, B.C. - Veteran guard Asher Mayan was lights out from the floor to help lead the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack men's basketball team to a convincing 92-84 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies inside the Tournament Capital Centre Friday night.
Mayan was 7-11 from the floor, 5-7 from three-point range and 6-6 from the free-throw line en route to a game-high 25 points. Dami Farinloye added 16 points, five rebounds and four assists while Cyrus Harrison knocked down five field goals en route to 15 points.
Emmanuel Bonsu scored 16 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Huskies. In total seven members of the visiting squad scored at least nine points.
Both teams started the night hot, shooting over per cent from the floor as a team respectively in the first quarter. The Wolfpack led for nearly the entire frame as Harrison and rookie Jack Clayton scored five and four points apiece but Bonsu countered with seven of his own to see the teams tied 24-24 after ten minutes of play.
While the defence on both teams started to clamp down in the second, Thompson Rivers were able to eke out 40-37 edge at the halftime break thanks in large part to five points from Farinloye in the frame.
The Wolfpack were able to stretch that lead in the third. TRU was up by as many as 14 points as Mayan caught fire in the frame for nine points. Saskatchewan was able to respond through five apiece from
Griffin Sharkey and
Dylan Miller but it was the hosts that led by 11 heading into the final ten minutes of play.
The game came right down to the wire. A 24-12 run to start the final frame sparked by 11 from
Owen Murphy Wiebe allowed the visitors to take the lead for the first time since early in the second quarter with just three minutes left to play. A complete team effort from TRU allowed them to pull out the victory however, Mayan and Steve Stinson both recorded layups while Farinloye knocked down a clutch three-pointer to give the home team an 86-82 lead they wouldn't surrender en route to the victory.
The Wolfpack move into a tie for fourth in the Pacific Division at 4-5 with the win while Saskatchewan falls to 0-7
