CALGARY, Alta. - Saturday afternoon the Huskie men's and women's wrestling teams headed west for the Dino Open, hosted by the University of Calgary. Both the men's and women's teams saw success on the mat, earning four gold medal finishes.
RESULTS
In their first event of the season, the Saskatchewan men's team put on an impressive performance with two wrestlers earning the top spot in their respective weight classes to help the team to a first place finish in the team standings. The Huskies totaled 42 points, four more than the defending Canada West champion Alberta Golden Bears. Calgary rounded out the podium positions with 29 points.
It was the Dogs'
Cole Sanderson and
Owen McGillivray who finished the day with gold medal placements in the 76kg and 125kg weight classes.
George Ren and Simon Trokhymchuk also earned podium positions finishing 2nd in the men's 100kg and 3rd in the men's 90kg weight classes respectively.
The women's team meanwhile earned a second place finish in the team standings with 37 points. Alberta would take the top spot with 52 points with Calgary finishing third with 25 points.
It was winning performances from Siera Mullin and
Myah Phillips who led Saskatchewan, earning gold in the 53kg and 93kg weight classes. Mullin was in peak form in Calgary, pinning opponents in two of her four matches scoring 18 points with none against.
Abby Wolff (2nd, 56kg), Adia Jones (3rd, 72kg),
Taebyn Tulp (2nd, 76kg), and
Olivia Rose (2nd, 83kg) also earned podium positions.
