PREVIEW: Huskies Look to Avenge Early Season Loss to Rams in UPC Showdown

SASKATOON, Sask. - This Saturday Griffiths Stadium will host it's final regular season home game of the 2024 campaign when the Saskatchewan Huskies football team clashes with the University of Regina Rams. In their second meeting of the season, there is plenty on the line for both teams with just two games remaining until the playoffs. A win for either side would go a long way in securing one of the four tickets to the Canada West postseason.

The game, sponsored by SaskTel, will also serve as another chapter in the 2024-25 U-Prairie Challenge presented by SaskMilk which is currently tied at a 5-5 stalemate through five games. Additionally, the first 1,00 fans through the gates of Griffiths will receive a co-branded Huskies and SaskTel belt bag, courtesy of Saturday's game sponsor.

Huskies Look to Avenge Early Season Loss to Rams in UPC Showdown

For the second time this season the Saskatchewan Huskies and Regina Rams will face in a U-Prairie Challenge, presented by SaskMilk, showdown. This time around the Dogs will be looking to avenge a Week 2 loss to the Rams, which saw the home team score 11 unanswered points after trailing the Huskies 28-22 at the half. At the time, Regina earned a 33-28 win to drop the Huskies to 0-2.

This week however, a different team takes the field at Griffiths as the Huskies are coming off back-to-back U SPORTS Top 10 wins and have climbed to 3rd-place in the Canada West standings. Three weeks ago Saskatchewan captured a thrilling 33-30 win over the No. 9-ranked Alberta Golden Bears which was highloghted by a 47-yard game-winning field goal from Lukas Scott with just 54 seconds remaining. The Dogs then followed that game up with a dominant victory over the then undefeated and No. 7-ranked Manitoba Bisons.

Thanks to their recent success the Huskies have managed to climb out of the crowded bottom half of the conference standings and sit one game back of the UBC THunderbirds (4-2) in 2nd-place ad two games behind the Bisons (5-1) in first. The Rams meanwhile have found themselves sliding down the standings after a 2-0 start to the season, having lost four straight to UBC, Alberta, Manitoba, and Calgary to move to 2-4.

The must-see matchup this week will undoubtedly be the explosive Huskie offence going up against a stout Rams defence. The Huskies currently rank 1st in points per game (32.5) and second in yards per game (458.8) and will take on a Rams defence which gives up the fewest points (20.6) and yards per game (362.2) in the conference.

On the other side of the ball, the Saskatchewan defence will look to continue its improved play in recent weeks against a pass-heavy Regina offence. In six games this season the Rams have only seen a rusher go over 100 yards once, a favorable matchup for the Dogs who's run defence has made strides against run-heavy opponents. The real task will be given to the USask secondary, who will be looking to limit quarterback Noah Pelletier who is averaging over 200 yards a game this season.

Key Stats
  • Fourth year running back Ryker Frank can become the Huskies all-time leader in career rushing touchdowns with just one trip to the endzone on Saturday. Frank is currently tied with former Huskie Terry Eisler (1985, 87-89) with 20 career rushing touchdowns, including eight this season alone. He can also move into the top-3 all-time in program rushing yards with just 51 yards against the Rams.
  • The Dogs boast one of the most potent offences in the country, averaging 32.5 points per game and 458.8 yards per game while converting on 96% of redzone trips, all which rank top-110 in the nation.
  • Regina is one of the most turnover-prone teams in the country with 15 through six games in 2024. The Rams have fumbled 15 times, losing 11, while throwing 4 interceptions. In the Huskies week 2 loss at Mosaic, the Rams fumbled 5 times with 3 being recovered by the USask defence.
  • The Dogs have one of the most successful field goal kickers in the conference in rookie Lukas Scott who is coverting on 78.6% of attempts, 2nd best in the conference. For the Rams, they convert at the lowest rate in the country at 45.5%.
