CHILLIWACK, BC - The Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team continued to thrive with a 3-0 win over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night. The win moves the Huskies to 5-2 in the standings and third place in the Prairie Division, while the Cascades are now 4-2-2 on the season after playing their first seven matches on the road.
Despite the Cascades controlling the bulk of the play in the early parts of the first half, it was the Huskies that would strike first. After Cascades' keeper Kareena Sahota turned a shot from Cheyenne Lehman away over the end line, the ensuing corner kick from
Jade Houmphanh found its way directly into the net to give the Huskies the 1-0 lead in the 25
th minute.
The Huskies would double their lead just before halftime, as a shot from
Alyssa D'Agnone forced a rebound in the box and Lehman pounced to bury it. Just minutes later, D'Agnone would nab a goal of her own as she got on the end of a free kick from Houmphanh in the 49th minute, powering a volley into the goal to seal it for Saskatchewan.
The Cascades poured the pressure on late, pushing defender Alanna Sydenham forward to try to get on the board. Despite the added numbers upfront, UFV would run out of time and the Huskies would celebrate a 3-0 win in BC.
Kalin Roberts was in goal for Saskatchewan for the evening, saving the lone shot on goal attempt from Syndenham in the 88th minute.
"So proud of the performance of this team tonight," said Huskie Head Coach
Jerson Barandica-Hamilton after the game. "It's not easy facing adversity but the resiliency and the willingness to play for each other was on full display. We keep growing and moving forward."
"A couple of mistakes put us down today," said Cascades Head Coach Ari Adams. "We have had such a good run on the road and it just didn't translate into this game. I think this is the first time we have been down by a couple of goals and it's definitely a learning curve. We just have to bounce back and regroup and come up with a plan for Sunday."
Nammi Nguyen would be named Saskatchewan's game MVP, with Alanna Syndenham taking home the honour for Fraser Valley.
