Huskies head into Dino territory
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies (2-1) hit the field in Calgary, AB tonight against the Calgary Dinos (0-3). This is the second matchup of the teams this season, after the Huskies welcomed the Dinos to Saskatoon for a non-conference game on August 25, 2023. Saskatchewan dominated the pre-season meeting, outscoring the Dinos 48-6.
Ranked nationally in fifth place by U SPORTS, Saskatchewan is coming off a rare loss for the program in week three, as the Alberta Golden Bears notched the 26-22 win over the Huskies. The game saw the Golden Bears outscore the Huskies 20-0 in the first half, before a pick six from DB
Finn Marcotte-Cribb turned the tide for the Dogs in the third quarter, rallying the team to 22 overall points in the second half. Ultimately, they couldn't overcome the first half deficit and the Huskies left the field with their first loss at home since 2018.
The team isn't one to dwell, and certainly shouldn't with an offensive powerhouse. Starting quarterback
Anton Amundrud is having an incredible season, hitting the top of the Canada West and U SPORTS stats boards with 323.3 average passing yards per game. The second year from Lloydminster, SK is proving to be a dominant force, thanks to a talented receiving core. Third year
Rhett Vavra joins him on the leader board and is second in the nation with four touchdowns, three of which occurred during the Huskies 40-6 win over the Regina Rams in week two.
The Dino's offence will run into trouble tonight against a talented linebacker crew. Third year
Nick Wiebe is second in the conference in tackles (15), assisted tackles (9) and tackles per game (6.5). Not far behind him is
Lane Novak, sitting sixth in the conference and
Seth Hundeby in eighth.
The special teams unit struggled in last week's game against the Alberta Golden Bears. Kicker
David Solie is looking to bounce back from last week when he missed from 42 and 41 yards out. He is one of the best kickers in Huskie history, and is ranked third in Canada West. Solie is expected to be in top form against the Dinos.
Scouting the Dinos:
The Dinos have had a tough start to their Canada West season and are currently tied for last place in the conference with the Manitoba Bisons with an 0-3 record.
Calgary has been hit hard by the injury bug this year. Their leading rusher from the 2022 season, Matthieu Clarke has not yet seen the field due to an injury during main camp. Starting quarterback Dom Britton was injured late in week two against the UBC Thunderbirds and missed the week three game against the Regina Rams, as did starting linebacker Daniel Flanigan. Starting quarterback for Friday night will be a game time decision, depending on Britton's status. Should Britton not be ready, they'll look to first year quarterback Xavier Vaillancourt, who got the call for Britton in last week's 23-16 loss against the Regina Rams.
The team has been bolstered by impressive performances from receiver Gob Deng. The second year has three receiving touchdowns in the last two weeks, including 85 and 76 yard touchdowns, and is third overall in Canada West with an average of 83.7 yards per game. Expect the Huskies defence to focus on Deng and keep the ball away from this talented receiver.
The Dino's defense has struggled in the first part of the season, allowing 33.7 points per game, and ranking last in the conference in fumble recoveries. They'll need to stay focused and sharp against
Anton Amundrud and one of the best offences in Canada West.
