WSOC: Last Minute Goal Gives Saskatchewan First Loss of the Season

EDMONTON, AB - The start of the 2023 women's soccer season has finally arrived and Saskatchewan Huskies opened the season on the road in Edmonton. Their first match up was against the MacEwan Griffins and it was down to the wire, as a last minute goal by MacEwan would give them the 2-1 win over Saskatchewan.

STARTERS
Saskatchewan would start Kalin Roberts in goal, with Caitlin Stove, Taryn Izsak, Nammi Nguyen, Marie Kilcher, Hailey Weber, Daraida Sutherland, Harlee Noel, Hanna Oliver, Cheyenne Lehmann, and Madison Mayert on the field for this first outing of the year.

In goal for MacEwan would be Sabrina Alexander, with Hannah Supina, Amelia Russo, Brenna Paquin, Sophie Lavalee, Anneke Odinga, Abbey Wright, Grace Mwasalla, Ella Fownes, Mariah Arnott, and Grace Schimpf manning the field.

GAME NOTES
Saskatchewan goalkeeper Kalin Roberts drew the yellow card early in the game at 4:36. The penalty kick was taken by MacEwan's Grace Mwasalla, who nabbed the first goal of the game, giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead.

Second goal belonged to the Huskies, as third year striker Marie Kilcher slipped one past MacEwan's Alexander, thanks to an assist from second year striker Cheyenne Lehmann at 32:59 into the first half. Halftime would see teams tied at 1-1.

The second half was a defensive battle, as both teams struggled to make the most of their offensive opportunities. There was a flurry of activity at 89:00, and Saskatchewan goalkeeper Kailin Roberts found herself in penalty trouble as she drew both a yellow and red card. Nadia Kalyar would take over in goal for the Huskies and was met a minute later by Macewan's Mwasalla, who would grab her second goal of the game right as time ran out, giving the Griffins the 2-1 win.

MacEwan's Grace Mwasalla was the obvious choice for the Griffin's game MVP, while Saskatchewan's Cheyenne Lehmann took home the honours for the Huskies.
