WBB: Saskatchewan Opens Season with Weekend Sweep of Alberta Pandas

EDMONTON, AB – The Huskies were back in action at the Saville Sports Centre in Edmonton on Saturday night for game two of their season opening series against the Alberta Pandas.

Friday night's game ended in a thrilling three-point buzzer beater from Gage Grassick and the rematch between these two teams was just as close on Saturday. It was another three-point win for the Huskies over the Pandas 72-69.

Throwing it back to the 2022-23 season, these two teams last met in the Canada West Semi-Final, where the Pandas handed the Huskies one of their only losses of the season at the most critical time, taking the 69-57 win to advance to the Canada West Final.

The Huskies looked to change that fortune and showed their skills on the court, coming home to Saskatoon with the weekend sweep of the Pandas.

First quarter action saw the Huskies trail by four 16-20, and the second quarter was just as close, with Saskatchewan outscoring the Pandas 16-14. The Huskies headed into halftime trailing by just two points, 32-34.

Alberta had the edge in the third quarter, surpassing the Huskies 23-17. Saskatchewan flipped the script in the fourth quarter, pushing the Pandas to the edge and dominating the quarter 23-12.

Leading the way for the Huskies was Tea DeMong, with an outstanding 20 points, five rebounds, and a steal. Carly Ahlstrom continued to prove her worth, racking up 15 points, five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

Alberta's Kiah Easton-Ihediohanma led scoring for the game with 32 points, adding four rebounds and three steals. Supported by Ella Rees' 10 points, three rebounds, one block and a steal, the two proved to be a dominant force for the Alberta Pandas.

The Huskies start the season strong, with a 2-0 record, while the Pandas are 0-2 on the season. With much more of the Canada West season yet to come, the next time these two powerhouses meet will be in the post-season.
