SASKATOON, SK – After the U SPORTS second-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies dominated Friday evening's match-up over the fourth-ranked Calgary Dinos, the two teams returned to Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the Physical Activity Complex for a Saturday afternoon rematch. These two teams proved why they are among the best in the country, and it was the Huskies that walked away with the 72-65 victory.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
- Calgary came out flying and took an early lead, forcing Saskatchewan to take a timeout at the five-minute mark to regroup. The Huskies would begin to switch gears in the second half of the first, but the Dinos held onto their lead ending the first quarter 24-23.
- Saskatchewan stole Calgary's lead early in the second, but the Dinos would pursue, taking the lead back by the end of the half, heading into halftime with the 35-33 lead.
- The two teams continued to battle, keeping the point difference within three and taking turns with the lead for the first half of the third quarter. The Huskies pulled ahead with Gage Grassick closing the quarter with a buzzer-beating three pointer and the 57-45 lead.
- The fourth quarter was neck and neck, with neither team letting up. The story of the fourth quarter was the Dinos foul trouble, as Louise Rouse and Kourtney Oss fouled out of the game in the final minutes.
THE STATS
- Saskatchewan's Gage Grassick played the full 40 minutes and led the scoring race with 23 points. She also contributed six rebounds and three steals for the Huskies.
- Kourtney Oss would lead the scoring for the Dinos, putting up 13 points and nine rebounds.
- Calgary's Louise Rouse led in rebounds, getting her hands on 13 rebounds (eight offensive, five defensive).
- The Huskies capitalized on turnovers, scoring 21 points from turnovers with the Dinos scoring 14.
THE STANDINGS
The Huskies ended the weekend with a sweep of the Dinos, keeping their undefeated record intact and improving to 8-0. The loss puts the Dinos at 6-2 and fourth place in Canada West.
THE EXTRAS
As part of the Huskies Ukrainian Night, Ukrainian dance was featured in the pre-game and half-time shows. The Pavlychenko Folklorique Ensemble and Rushnychok Ukrainian Folk Dance groups wowed the crowd with their performances.
