SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies welcomed the MacEwan Griffins to the PAC this weekend for their 2023-24 home-opener after starting their season on the road in Edmonton and splitting the series with the Golden Bears. The Huskies extended their win streak by one after a win over the Griffins in an exhilarating game.
After a slow start, the energy picked up rapidly as the two teams would continuously go back and forth, basket-to-basket, in what would prove to be a well-matched game. The Huskies established their lead early in the first and would take the quarter 18-15 over the Griffins.
As the game picked up in the second, the Huskies were able to briefly widen the gap, ending the first half with a 42-33 lead over the Griffins.
The game remained tight into the third, and fouls started to add up as emotions heightened. MacEwan would reach 15 personal fouls with Saskatchewan close behind, recording 10 personal fouls by the end of the third. Saskatchewan would remain in the lead after the third quarter, 56-50.
Both teams came into the fourth determined to take the win, but Saskatchewan would come out on top by once again, widening the gap in their lead and finishing the game with a 78-61 win over the Griffins.
Starting centre for Saskatchewan,
Easton Thimm, a 6'9" first-year, came to play in a big way, showing everyone what he could accomplish in the paint. The rookie put up 17 points and 10 rebounds to earn a double-double.
The top scorer for Saskatchewan was fifth-year
Alexander Dewar, with 20 points on the night with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. For MacEwan, third-year Marco Correas would lead the team with 18 points and 6 rebounds, and third-year Milan Jaksic followed right behind, putting up 17 points and 12 rebounds, respectively.
