WSOC: Huskies on Fire with Win over Wesmen

WINNIPEG, MB - The Saskatchewan Huskies scored three goals in the first 16 minutes and kept alive a chance at finishing top of the table in the Prairie Division with a 4-0 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West women's soccer action Saturday at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex.

Alyssa D'Agnone, Cheyenne Lehmann and Jade Houmphanh scored in the eighth, 11th and 16th minutes to stake the Huskies to a commanding early lead as the visitors improved to 9-3-1 in Canada West play in 2023.

"I thought the first 25 minutes, we played with intensity and the tempo we were wanting. After that we got a little bit complacent. Overall, we scored four goals and our keeper had a shutout. It was a very successful day for us," said Huskie Head Coach Jerson Baradica-Hamilton after the game.

Winnipeg's Madison Priebe made a career-high 19 saves and, in the process, set the conference all-time record for saves in a season, surpassing UNBC's Jordan Hall, who made 128 stops in 2013. Priebe now stands at 141 with one game to play.

D'Agnone scored her sixth of the season, Lehmann her third and Houmphanh notched her fifth with each goal assisted by Marie Kilcher, who now leads the team in points. Kilcher rounded out the scoring in the 71st with a strike from the left side that narrowly eluded Priebe and snuck inside the far post.

Nadia Kalyar made six saves for the Huskies and Lehmann led them with six shots, five on goal.

The Huskies sit in second place in the division, one point back of MacEwan, which drew with Calgary Saturday.

"There's a great togetherness with the team. The players on the bench are giving positive energy and great feedback," said Barandica-Hamilton. "There's been a lot of work behind the scenes and it's been exciting to watch this season."
