EDMONTON, AB - Scoring six goals in the first 28 minutes of Friday night's game at Clare Drake Arena, the Alberta Golden Bears skated away with a convincing 7-2 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Alberta's Nolan Volcan recorded a hat-trick in the win — scoring two goals late in the first, and one late in the second to secure the Bears win. Daneel Lategan also added a pair, with Curtis Trolley and Adam Hall also finding the scoresheet for Alberta. Rookie Ethan Kruge stopped 30 of the 32 shots he face in goal.
Justin Ball and
Vince Loschiavo scored for the Huskies, with starter
Jordan Kooy getting chased from the crease after giving up five goals on 24 shots.
After Ball opened the scoring in the opening five minutes, Alberta put their foot down in the opening frame. Alberta outshot Saskatchewan 22-10 in the first, leading 3-1 thanks to two from Volcan and a goal late from Trolley.
The Bears continued to pour it on in the second, scoring four more, with three coming in the first eight minutes. A goalie change to
Declan Hobbs didn't pay off, with the Huskies backup surrendering a pair of goals in the second.
"It wasn't good at all," said Head Coach
Brandin Cote after the game. "They dominated the first period, had 22 shots which is unacceptable. It's hard to recover after a first period like that."
The Huskies will look to recover and regroup as game two ot the series with their rivals will start Saturday night at 8:00 PM. Game can be streamed live on
