EDMONTON, AB - Rookie goaltender Ethan Kruger was steady and consistent, stopping all 27 Saskatchewan Huskies shots he faced in a 3-0 Golden Bears win. The win clinched a series sweep for Alberta over Saskatchewan.
The win temporarily moves Alberta above Mount Royal into second in Canada West, however the Cougars have two games in hand on the Bears. Saskatchewan falls to fifth with the two losses this weekend in Edmonton.
Jakin Smallwood, Justin Hall, and Ryan Hughes all scored for the Golden Bears, who outshot Saskatchewan 25-17. After surrendering five goals in Friday night's game,
Jordan Kooy turned in a better performance for the Huskies on Saturday, stopping 32 of 25 in net.
The first period proved to be a bit sluggish, as neither team was able to make anything happen offensively. Although there were three powerplay opportunties, the points remained elusive, with neither team scoring and ending the period 0-0.
The Golden Bears picked it up in the second, scoring three times on 18 shots. Smallwood opened the scoring with his 12th, beating Kooy over the shoulder from inside the circle. Hall doubled the lead with his fifth three minutes later, before Hughes notched his eighth with 1:29 left in the frame.
The third period was a mirror of the first, but with many more penalties.
Vince Loschiavo and
Evan Fiala would each serve a 10-minute misconduct in the third period, both for checking to the head. While the third period was aggressive, the defences did their job and there would be no scoring in the period. The Golden Bears take the 3-0 win over the Huskies.
Heading into bye week, the Huskies sit at 12-8 and drop to fifth place in the Canada West standings. Next up for the team is the U-Prairie Challenge championship weekend on February 3. It's the Saskatchewan Huskies against the Regina Cougars in the final weekend of the U-Prairie Challenge. The Huskies currently lead the Cougars/Rams with 5.75 to 2.25 points.
