SASKATOON – The Huskies were back in action against the UBC Thunderbirds looking to get the weekend split.
UBC couldn't have drawn up a better start as Chris Douglas ripped home a shot short side beating the Huskies
Jordan Kooy just 31 seconds in. The rest of the period was back and forth before Sam Huo wired a bouncing puck passed the Huskies goaltender with 36 seconds left in the period. Shots were 17-9 in favour of the T-Birds.
The second period was one filled with excitement with 26 penalty minutes handed out in the frame. The Huskies took advantage of the Tian Rask charging penalty as
Vince Loschiavo rifled one passed Kaeden Lane to cut the lead to one at 12:11 remaining in the period. Things heated up after that goal when the rough play began and things started to get scrappy. With just over two and a half minutes left in the period, UBC's Conner McDonald was given a two-minute checking from behind penalty and a 10-minute misconduct for a hit on Loschiavo. Loschiavo wasn't seriously hurt and would play the rest of the game. Saskatchewan failed to capitalize on the man advantage though, trailing by one after two periods. Shots were 13-5 in favour of the Huskies in the second.
The third period was evenly matched through the first ten minutes of the frame before Loshiavo tipped home his second of the game off an
Evan Fiala point shot to tie it up with just under nine minutes remaining. Both teams were unwilling to give an inch. Ryan Pouliot was given a 10-minute misconduct after having choice words with the official after the play with just under five minutes to go. With just over a minute remaining Liam Kindree finished off a tic-tac-toe play to give the T-Birds the lead. The Huskies were unable to come up with the equalizer falling for the second straight night 3-2.
Kaeden Lane stopped 31 of 33 for UBC in net while Kooy stopped 30 or 33 in the game. The Huskies finished the night with five power play opportunities but were only able to find the back of the net once on the man advantage. There was 36 penalty minutes handed out in the game with the T-Birds taking 32 minutes in the game.
The Huskies will be up for a tough test next weekend as they face off against their historic rivals the Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton. Puck drop for Friday night's game is 8:00 PM (CT). The live broadcast can be found on CanadaWest.TV.
