Dewar leads the way, Huskies win by double-digits over Wesmen

SASKATOON — The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's basketball team closed their regular-season in style, as they defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 80-64 on Ron & Jane Centre Court at the PAC.

After taking a nine-point lead into half time, Saskatchewan took advantage of what was a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 30-18 to take a 21-point lead into the fourth. From there, the Huskies were able to take care of business in the fourth and come out with a 16-point victory on home floor.

Four different Huskies recorded double-digit outings, with Alexander Dewar leading the way with an 18-point outing on 6-11 shooting. Emmanuel Akintunde, who was honoured prior to the game as a graduating fifth-year, registered a double-double with a 10-point, 11-rebound outing.

Saskatchewan outscored Winnipeg 46-24 in the paint and cleaned up on second-chance points, holding a 12-5 advantage over the visitors on the offensive glass.

Malachi Alexanders led the way for Winnipeg, registering 10 points on 4-10 shooting, while Eric Racine stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds and three assists.

With the win, Saskatchewan improved to 11-5 on the season, as they bounced back from Friday night's overtime defeat.

Winnipeg fell to the .500 mark, closing their regular-season with an 8-8 record.

The contest was likely the final game of the season on home floor for the Huskies, who will now turn their attention to the postseason.

Both programs will be back in action in two weeks time, for the Canada West Playoff, which will whittle 17 teams down to four. From there, the highest-remaining seed will play host to the Canada West Final Four. The Playoff officially gets underway on Mar. 4, which will be hosted by the University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge. All the action can be seen on CanadaWest.TV.
