SASKATOON, SK – After a 86-55 win on Friday night, the Saskatchewan Huskies looked to continue that momentum on Saturday afternoon against the MRU Cougars.
Starting for the Huskies were Logan Reider,
Carly Ahlstrom, Tea Demong, Gage Grassick and Ella Murphy Wiebe, with Maddison Hooper, Jenessa Ramsoomair, Tanis Metcalf, Jordan Blaskin and Jaime Lalor getting the start for the Cougars.
The first quarter saw the Huskies offence put some pressure on MRU, with Gage Grassick pulling in nine points. Tanis Metcalfe was the leader for MRU with four points. Saskatchewan's defense was a powerhouse, scoring 14 points from turnovers in the quarter, with the Huskies leading the Cougars 27-10 after one quarter of play.
The Cougars struggled in the second quarter when faced with a powerful Huskies team, with the Huskies throwing up 26 points to the Cougars 16. Heading into halftime, Saskatchewan lead MRU 53-26.
The third quarter saw the MRU Cougars find their rhythm on offence, posting 18 points over Saskatchewan's 15. Jenessa Ramsoomair put up an impressive 12 points for the Cougars, with their defense keeping
Carly Ahlstrom to just five points in the third quarter. The quarter would end with the Huskies leading the Cougars 68-44.
The fourth quarter would see the Huskies keep their foot on the gas, growing their lead and ending the game with a 83-55 win over MRU.
The Huskies offence was dominated by
Carly Ahlstrom, who led the team with 25 points. Gage Grassick had 10 rebounds and 14 points, and rookie Logan Reider contributed 12 points to round out the Huskies top three scorers.
MRU was led by Jenessa Ramsoomair with 18 points, with Jordan Blaskin contributing nine points, and Jamie Lalor adding seven. Tanis Metcalf had a team high eight rebounds.
Tonight's game was special for the Huskies program as we celebrated our 2021-2022 team with a banner raising ceremony. Their 2021-22 Canada West Championship banner will join the others on permanent display at the Physical Activity Complex.
Next weekend will see the Huskies hit the road to take on the Regina Cougars in U Prairie Challenge action in Regina, SK. Games can be streamed on CanadaWest.TV.
