WBB: Tough Weekend in Regina for Huskies

REGINA, SK - A visit to our neighbours in the south proved to be a tough road trip for the Saskatchewan Huskies (2-2) as they fell to the Regina Cougars (4-0) on both nights.

FRIDAY NIGHT

On Friday night at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport, the No. 2-ranked University of Regina hit a school-record 20 three-pointers in a big 108-95 victory over the No. 4 Saskatchewan Huskies.

Regina's Dayna Pearce drilled six three-pointers while Jade Belmore hit five and both Zoe Hartmann and Cara Misskey hit four. Julia Vydrova hit the other triple for the Cougars, helping them break the team record of 17 that they set back in 2014 against Winnipeg. The Cougars' total of 108 points is the third highest in team history,

The Huskies certainly weren't sleeping through the game however, as the Huskies would hit 16 of 20 free throws and a free throw percentage of 80%.

Carly Ahlstrom hit 16 points on the evening, with Logan Reider adding 14 points, and Kayla Shand contributing 8. The Cougars however would lead in almost all facets of the game, leading to the win for Regina.

"It was an exciting game for the fans and a tough game for the coaches. Every offensive possession I was thrilled with what they were doing, and every defensive possession I was frustrated with how much we were conceding. I liked our pace to the game and I'm sure both teams will clean up defensively for tomorrow, but it was definitely a great battle between a couple of provincial rivals tonight," said Cougars Head Coach Dave Taylor.

SATURDAY NIGHT

After some retooling and a bit of rest, the Huskies were looking to improve in all areas of the game on Saturday night. However, the Regina Cougars weren't about to let that happen and the Huskies fell 85-54 to the Cougars. It was Jade Belmore's triple-double that would lead the Cougars to victory.

The Cougars outscored the Huskies in all four quarters, but it was a close first half until Regina closed out the second quarter with eight straight points that ballooned their three-point lead into an 11-point advantage at halftime. Regina held Saskatchewan without a field goal for the first five minutes of the third quarter and never looked back. A 9-0 early in the fourth sealed the win.

Carly Ahlstrom, Logan Reider and Kyla Shand were once again points leaders for the Huskies, scoring 16, 14, and 8 respectively.

U PRAIRIE CHALLENGE
The two games in Regina were part of the U Prairie Challenge presented by SaskMilk. A celebration of varsity sport in Saskatchewan, the annual points-based competition between the between the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan involves 11 different men's and women's events, including soccer, football, hockey, volleyball, basketball, track and field, and cross country.

Saskatchewan is currently leading Regina in overall points but expect that point spread to be decreased after the weekend in the provincial capital.
