SASKATOON, SK – It's a rare treat to have a Tuesday night game in the Canada West. Due to a water main break at Merlis Belsher Place the beginning of November, the U-Prairie Challenge game between the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies was rescheduled and Huskie fans finally got to see these two teams in action.
While it seemed Regina had ran away with the game in the first and second periods, an exciting third would lift the Dogs over the Cougars with a 4-3 win.
Starting five for the Huskies included Cael Zimmerman, Dawson Hold,
Connor Hobbs,
Jaxan Kaluski and
Gunner Kinniburgh, with Regina starting Tyler Heidt, Tyler Adams, Riley Krane, Brennan Riddle and Jackson Doucet.
Jordan Kooy would be in net the entire night for the Huskies, with Adam Evanoff getting the sixty minutes in net for the Cougars.
The first period saw both teams start out sluggish, and scoring didn't happen until 13:01 into the first when Randen Schmidt found the net with the assist from Eric Pearce.
Saskatchewan answered in the second period with an impressive goal from Liam Keeler at 6:38 to grab his sixth goal of the season. Regina would score the next two goals in just sixty-five seconds, with Riley Krane grabbing the first goal and Randen Schmidt netting the second. Saskatchewan would outscore Regina in shots on goal 20-12 in the first two periods, but it was Regina who would head into the third with a 3-1 lead.
The third period would see the Cougars find penalty trouble, as they headed to the box four times. The Huskies took advantage of the opportunity, scoring three goals in the third to win the game 4-3. Huskies Cael Zimmerman,
Jared Dmytriw and Carter Stebbings would all find the scoreboard in the third period.
"We always seem to make it interesting," said Cael Zimmerman after the game. "Right from the first period there I thought we had great control in their zone. It's important to make sure the bench stays up, and we don't get down on each other when we aren't winning. Gelling together as a group and not trying to do it on your own – just keep working together and good things come."
The 10-6 Huskies don't have much time to rest as the welcome the Calgary Dinos to Merlis Belsher Place in just under three days. Puck drops at 7:00 PM on Friday and 5:00 PM on Saturday. Tickets are available at
