SASKATOON, SK – The Saskatchewan Huskies were back at home taking on the Mount Royal Cougars this evening. It was a battle between two of the top teams in the nation with the Huskies ranked tenth in the country and the Cougars ranked fifth.
The first set saw a close start with back-and-forth action, until the Cougars scored three straight to go up 16-11. Huskies Head Coach
Sean McKay called a timeout and it seemed to be just what the Huskies needed, as they climbed back to take a 20-19 lead. With the set tied at 22, the Cougars offence powered through with three straight points to take the first set 25-22.
The second set saw the Huskies jump out to a 17-14 lead, but MRU was unwilling to let go quietly, battling back to shorten the Huskies lead 23-21. The Dogs were determined to take the set, and were bolstered by
Dylan Mortensen's five kills in the set to take the second 25-23.
Levi Olson had and impressive second set performance with four kills of his own. The second set win for the Huskies was only the second set the Cougars have lost this season.
The high-powered Cougars jumped out quickly to a 18-9 lead on the Huskies in the third set. The Dogs would go on a run to bring the set within four points, but the comeback attempt fell short with Mount Royal taking the set 25-2, leading to a must win fourth set for the Dogs.
After a tight start to the fourth set the, Cougars would find their groove, scoring six straight to go up 14-8 before a Huskies timeout. Saskatchewan was unable to slow the momentum and sustain a run of their own falling 25-16. The Cougars showed why they are ranked fifth in the nation with the 3-1 win over the Huskies.
Mortensen had 17 kills to lead the Huskies, while Noah Opseth had 23 assets. For the Cougars, Jacob Van Geel had a game high 20 kills with Jackson Brennan contributing 45 assists on the night.
