SASKATOON – The USask Huskies and Mount Royal Cougars put on a show that kept volleyball fans on their toes this Saturday afternoon. Saskatchewan asserted their dominance by handing Mount Royal their first loss of the season.
The No. 5 Cougars fell to the No. 10 Huskies in a dramatic turn of events – Saskatchewan came from behind and ultimately won in 5 sets. It was an action-packed rematch between two nationally ranked teams that closed the weekend series with a split.
The Huskies came out hot in the first set closing quickly with a convincing 25-17 finish. Fifth-year Dogs,
Levi Olson and
Dylan Mortensen, carried through the first by filling up the score sheet in tandem.
Mount Royal's Max Horonga opened the second with a kill to kickstart the Cougars momentum. The Cats and Dogs went back and forth before MRU tied up the match by taking the second 25-22. The set was backed by a .353 attacking percentage while the Huskies attack struggled with 9 errors.
The Cougars came back from a 3-10 deficient early in the third set to ultimately pull in front of the Huskies with a 25-23 finish.
A must win fourth set for the Huskies proved to delight the home crowd at the PAC. Saskatchewan battled through a consistent 6-point deficit through to the middle of the set and then turned it on late. Back and forth set points carried on until the Huskies took the set 28-26.
The Huskies kept on the gas pedal into the forced fifth set. Mount Royal extended the match until it tied at 10-10. The Cougars fell 15-11 after the young pup, Emmett Graham came out to play.
Dylan Mortensen racked up 23 kills, 3 blocks, and 9 digs with a team attacking percentage of .250. Jacob Van Geel led MRU with 16 kills and had a team attacking percentage of .226.
The Huskies head into a bye week before they travel to Kamloops, BC to meet the Wolfpack on November 25
