MVB: Huskies Take Down MacEwan in Straight Sets

SASKATOON – The Saskatchewan Huskies came out hungry in the home opener against the MacEwan Griffins.

It was all Huskies all night long in the Bridge City as the Dogs made light work of the Griffins, sweeping them in straight sets.

In the first set, the Huskies came out firing going up 4-0 before a quick timeout by the Griffins. MacEwan found their legs after the timeout and battled back to go up 8-6. The back and forth set continued until it was 19-16 in favour of the Dogs when the Huskies went on a 6-0 run to take the first set 25-16.

The second set started out back and forth with both teams struggling to go on a run early. It wasn't till the Huskies went on a six-point run to go up 21-13 that one of the teams found a groove. The six-point run led the Dogs to a 25-17 second set win to go up 2-0.

The third set saw the Griffins fighting to extend the game showing they did not want to go home early, fighting to a 20-18 lead in the set. Dylan Mortensen for the Huskies was determined not to head to a fourth set with two kills and an ace in the Dogs final seven points leading to a 25-23 set win.

Dylan Mortensen led the Huskies offense with 19 kills on the night. Noah Opseth had a game high 34 assists for the Dogs. MacEwan's Nolan Pearce and Alexei Walisser each had 6 kills and Alexander Lyndon had 14 assists.

This was the Huskies second win on the season after splitting the opening weekend with the defending national champions the Alberta Golden Bears.

Head Coach Sean McKay knows the work is not done. "I think we started a bit slow and, and ended a bit slow, but we had some good stuff in the middle there. We just need to make sure we're playing and keeping to our standards."

The teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM at the PAC in Saskatoon. Tickets can be purchased at Huskietickets.com.
