Justin Ball and Jaxan Kaluski each recorded their first-career U SPORTS hat tricks, helping the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men's hockey team win 11-3 over the provincial rival Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place.
To go along with the standout performances of Ball and Kaluski, Zane Franklin had a goal and five assists, while Aiden Bulych scored his first-career U SPORTS goal. Donovan Neuls, Chantz Petruic and Connor Hobbs also found the back of the net in the win.
The Huskies powerplay was the story of the night, going six for six on the man-advantage and making Regina pay for each of their minors on the evening.
Roddy Ross made 17 saves on the night, helping Saskatchewan move to 10-4-0 on the season.
Curtis Meger and Donovan Buskey split time between the pipes in the loss for Regina, who fell to 7-6-1 after the loss. Tate Coughlin, Riley Krane and Dylan McCabe scored the goals for the visitors.
After outshooting the visiting Cougars throughout the majority of the opening frame, the Huskies were rewarded in the late stages of the first. Donovan Neuls took advantage of a nifty feed from Zane Franklin, making it 1-0 Dogs.
They kept it coming, as with just 7.8 seconds remaining in the period Justin Ball found his way onto a loose puck at the side of the cage and put it home to give the homeside a two-goal lead late in the frame.
From there, it was pretty much all Dogs, as they potted four goals in the second-period to take a commanding 6-1 lead through 40 minutes.
In what was an eventful third-period, the Huskies added on another five goals — including all three of Kaluski's tallies.
Saskatchewan is back in action next weekend as they welcome the Alberta Golden Bears to town. Meanwhile, Regina travels to Calgary for a pair of contests against the Mount Royal Cougars.
