SASKATOON - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies were unable to climb their way out of a second-period deficit, as they fell to the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place.
Wyatt Johnson and Vince Loschiavo found the back of the net for the Huskies, their third and fourth tallies of the season, but that was all the host Huskies could muster up on the night. Saskatchewan was simply unable to produce offence when they needed it most, as missed opportunities emerged as the storyline of the contest.
Alberta scored three goals in nearly a ten-minute span in the middle frame, which gave them a 4-1 lead — one that in the end was insurmountable for Saskatchewan.
The Huskies dominated in the third period — a frame they entered trailing by three — but it was only Loschiavo who could find the back of the net in the final 20, which was a period that seen the green-and-white outshoot the visitors 15-8 and ultimately 42-29 in the hockey game.
For Alberta, Noah Philp had two goals — including the game winner — Luc Smith had a goal and two assists, while former Saskatoon Blade Eric Florchuk also found twine. Nick Schneider was equal to the task all night long for the visitors, making 40 saves on 42 shots.
On the opposite end of the ice, Roddy Ross did nearly all he could on the night for the Huskies, including making a tremendous post-to-post sliding stop in the third that kept the Huskies comeback hopes alive.
The Huskies fell to 10-5-0 with the loss, while the Golden Bears improved to 10-2-1.
Saskatchewan will look for the series split tomorrow night, as they take on the Golden Bears in the second-half of the doubleheader.
