SASKATOON- The University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Manitoba Bisons 71-59 on Saturday night at the Physical Activity Complex to complete the weekend sweep.
Four Huskies scored in double figures to lift the team to the victory. Summer Masikewich recorded another double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Katriana Philipenko had 3 made triples as and 8 made free throws to finish with 17 points. Carly Ahlstrom and Libby Epoch also contributed in the win with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
"Manitoba stretched their defense out to the three-point line so we needed to have an attacking and driving mentality. We looked to go into the key more aggressively to draw fouls," Katriana Philipenko said about how she found success at the free throw line.
The Bisons were able to stay within striking distance the whole game by shooting 40% (10-25) from behind the arc. Fifth-year guard Taylor Randall led the team 16 points, including 4 made threes.
The difference in the game was the rebounding, where the Huskies dominated the glass with 50 rebounds compared to the Bisons 35.
"We knew we had a size advantage this weekend and could secure rebounds on the offensive and defensive ends. The 20 offensive boards we had gave us more quality possessions that led to points and trips to the free throw line," said Performance Analyst Connor Jay.
The Huskies finish 2021 undefeated with an 8-0 record heading into the winter break. The Dogs will return to the court on January 21, 2022 to play the Brandon Bobcats at the PAC. The Bisons will go into 2022 with a 2-6 record and will play the Winnipeg Wesmen on January 15.
