SASKATOON- The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's basketball team moved to 4-0 after an 82-52 win over the visiting Regina Cougars on Saturday night at the PAC.
"I was really concerned about Regina coming into this weekend," said Thomaidis. "They have a high powered offence and have been showing really well against some good teams. So for us to win convincingly both nights, there's a lot of positives to take from that."
On a night where the Huskies 2019-20 U SPORTS National Championship winning team was honoured, this years rendition of the team made it known they look like another title threat.Â
For the second-straight night Summer Masikweich led the way with an efficient 29 points on 11-16 shooting, to go along with 14 rebounds to complete the double-double.
"She had a great weekend for us," said Thomaidis. "She can score in a number of different ways. She's got great foot work. Another solid night."
Moose Jaw native Libby Epoch also had one of her best games of this young 2021-22 season, stuffing the stat sheet with 15 points on 4-9 shooting, seven assists and seven boards.
"I thought she had a pretty aggressive mindset. She's just shooting the ball well and I'm happy to see that," said Thomaidis. "She's worked so hard on her offensive game. She knew this year she was going to be relied on to score a little bit more and not being surrounded by Sabine Dukate. I think she's doing a nice job of attacking that mentality."
Leading the way for Regina was Warman product and first-year point guard Cara Misskey, recording 19 points and four assists, earning some recognition from Thomaidis post-game.
"She's very aggressive. She attacks the rim and finishes well around the rim. She was a force," said Thomaidis.Â
The Cougars fell to 1-3 after the defeat. They're back in action next weekend as they continue their four-game road swing, as they head to Winnipeg for two meetings with the Manitoba Bisons.
As mentioned, the Huskies now stand at 4-0 and Thomaidis is pleased with where the team stands.
"I just think we can be a better defensive team this year, maybe than we were last year. Summer looks like she's a better player than she was and with Libby scoring like that,"
"We're going to have to rely on some of our young players to contribute, so to get that kind of experience and to see them have some successes is certainly a good sign for us moving forward."
The Huskies are not back in Canada West conference action until Nov. 26 and 27, when they meet again with the Cougars in the provincial capital, which Thomaidis acknowledges is a bit of a schedule oddity.
"In some ways it's nice. We get a couple of weeks ago, we certainly got a lot of footage and things we need to work on. So we'll spend some time on that and hopefully this will still be fresh for us in a few weeks time," said Thomaidis.Â
