The University of Saskatchewan Huskies pulled out a 71-68 overtime win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in a Canada West women's basketball game at the CKHS.
Libby Epoch's three-pointer with a minute to go in regulation pulled the Huskies level at 60-60 after the Cougars had led by as many as six points in the fourth. In the final minute of the extra session, Saskatchewan made two defensive stops and grabbed a key offensive rebound to help come away with the victory.
Saskatchewan's win came in spite of a career night from Regina guard Faith Reid, who dropped a career-high 28 points in the loss. Reid was 6-for-10 from three-point range and 10-for-17 from the field overall while also pulling down five rebounds for the Cougars.
Carly Ahlstrom was Saskatchewan's leading scorer with 23 points, most of which came on her team-leading five triples. Epoch and Summer Masikewich both added double-doubles as Epoch scored 16 and added 10 rebounds while Masikewich registered 11 and 10.
Besides Reid's 28-point outburst, the Cougars (2-5) also got a double-digit effort from Dayna Pearce who was 3-for-4 from the arc and finished with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. Julia Vydrova tied Epoch and Masikewich for the game high with 10 rebounds.
Saskatchewan, ranked No. 2 in the latest U SPORTS poll, improves to 5-0 with the victory.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night (6:00) at the CKHS in Regina.
