Win and they're in.
The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's soccer team is heading west to Langley with a chance to make history.
With three remaining spots for the four remaining Canada West teams, one win this weekend would punch their ticket to Sydney, N.S. in what would be their second U SPORTS National Championship appearance in program history.
The Huskies will continue that pursuit this Friday in their semifinal match against Trinity Western.
A win would clinch Saskatchewan an appearance in both the Canada West championship match and at nationals. But with Canada West receiving three bids at this year's eight-team nationals, a loss would mean Saskatchewan would need to bounce back in their bronze medal match to reach nationals.
If it wasn't for Jadyn Steinhauer, the Huskies wouldn't be in this position. The fifth-year keeper had a night that will go down as one of the best single-game performances in program history. In what was her final match on home field, in her hometown, she stopped three of five shots from the spot in penalty kicks to punch her team a ticket to their fourth Canada West Final Four in program history.
Now what does she have for an encore?
Steinhauer and the Huskies are comfortable in the underdog role. They dethroned the defending Canada West Champion Calgary Dinos last week.Â
Next up? The number-one ranked team in the nation. Trinity Western is a perennial powerhouse in U SPORTS soccer. This year has been no exception.Â
But this is a veteran-laden Huskies team. They proved on Friday night; they aren't scared of the spotlight. Now with the nation on notice, they'll look to play spoiler once again.Â
Quotables:Â
Huskies head coach Jerson Barandica-Hamilton on carrying excitement forward into Friday:
"We want to always be on the rise and get to the next level. This team is special and we're going to continue to battle. We're destined for great things and this program is just on the rise. We're just going to keep doing what we did tonight."
5 Things:
- Steinhauer, Maya Gabruch, Kalli Cowles and Taneil Gay were all a part of the first-and-only Saskatchewan team to compete at nationals back in 2016. They're looking to start their career the way the ended it; with an appearance at nationals.
- The Huskies last postseason clash against the Spartans was back in 2016, when they won 1-0 in penalties in the CIS Consolation semifinal.
- Steinhauer was named the U SPORTS Athlete of the Week thanks to her standout performance last Friday night in the quarter-final win.
- Along with Saskatchewan and Trinity Western, the MacEwan Griffins and UBC Thunderbirds round out the remainder of the Canada West Final Four.
- As mentioned, Trinity Western is ranked number-one in the nation, while UBC and MacEwan slotted in at number-four and five respectively in the latest U SPORTS Top 10.
