No. 2 Huskies shut out Bisons in men’s hockey to finish sweep

WINNIPEG – Less than 24 hours after the Manitoba Bisons fell to the Saskatchewan Huskies in the first game of their weekend series, the two teams were right back at it on Saturday, October 30 at Wayne Fleming Arena in Winnipeg.

For the second straight night, the Huskies opened the scoring with a goal less than a minute into the game. Saskatchewan forward Owen Hardy drove into the zone, put the puck on net, and teammate Jared Dmytriw put home the rebound to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. That was all the Huskies needed on the night as they went on to defeat the Bisons by a final score of 4-0.

"When you play a team like Manitoba you have to work hard," said Dmytriw. "Last night we were able to get up but then let them back into the game. It was good for us today to get that lead and play our game for 60 minutes."

Manitoba goaltender Jeremy Link once again was the star of the night for the home side. Despite the loss, Link stopped 45 of the 49 shots he faced in the game.

"Jeremy gave us chance to win today," stated Bisons head coach Mike Sirant. "You can see that he's getting better, getting more comfortable and confident in the net. He really battled today and made some really great saves."

The Huskies dominated the remainder of the first period, out shooting the Bisons 18-3 and, before the period was out, scored their second of the game. Link steered a puck into the face-off circle, leaving the rebound for Saskatchewan's Connor Hobbs who walked in from the point and wired the puck over the shoulder of the Herd's goaltender. The teams hit the locker room after the opening frame with the Huskies up 2-0.

The second period ended scoreless but not due to a lack of opportunity for Manitoba. Just after the midway mark of the middle frame, the Huskies' Hobbs caught Tony Apetagon with a check from behind and was given five minutes in the box for boarding as well as a 10-minute misconduct. Unfortunately for the Bisons, they weren't able to capitalize on the extended power play opportunity and it was Saskatchewan who carried their 2-0 lead into the third.

Zane Franklin extended the visitor's lead early on in the final period with his second goal of the season. Dmytriw added his second of the game with a power play tally late in the third. The game concluded with Saskatchewan out-shooting Manitoba by a total of 49-15 and the visitors winning by a final score of 4-0.

The Bisons will have a conference bye next week before resuming their Canada West campaign on the road against the Regina Cougars on November 12 and 13. Saskatchewan will also be on the road to the play the Cougars for their next game on November 5.
