SASKATOON – In a return to form the No. 1 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies bounced back from their first defeat of 2019-20 with a dominant 101-39 victory over the UBC Okanagan Heat inside the PAC on Friday night.
A dominant first quarter put a gap between the two teams that the Heat were never able to recover from.
With the score 5-4 in favour of the Huskies early, the home team went on a dominant 21-4 run to end the frame. That streak was keyed by six points from fifth-year
Vera Crooks and four three-pointers coming from three different players.
A pair of players finished with double-doubles for the Huskies.
Summer Masikewich led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds while
Libby Epoch recorded 11 points and 12 assists.
It was a display in depth of scoring that really shone for the hosts however.
Sabine Dukate (14), Crooks (12),
Kyla Shand (11) and
Megan Ahlstrom all finished with double-digit point totals.
Fifth-year standout Jordan Korol was strong for the Heat, recording 11 points and seven rebounds. Close behind Korol was Jaeli Ibbetson. Eight points and 11 rebounds.
Saskatchewan held a significant advantage in both shooting percentage 48.8-23 and in forcing turnovers 26-9 on the night.
With the win the Huskies move their Canada West record to 16-1 while the Heat fall to 2-17.
These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon inside the PAC with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m. For the Heat it will be the final game of their 2019-20 campaign while Saskatchewan will travel to Edmonton next week for a pair of games against the Pandas.
