SASKATOON – In a battle between the two teams atop the national rankings it was the host University of Saskatchewan Huskies who came out on top, leading wire-to-wire for a dominant 66-38 victory over the Calgary Dinos.
A stifling Huskies defence made all the difference on the night as they held the Dinos to shooting just 12-58 from the floor while also forcing the visitors into committing 15 turnovers.
Summer Masikewich and
Sabine Dukate once again led the way for the Huskies. Masikewich scored 18 points and pulled down seven boards while Duke sunk a quarter of three-points en route to scoring 14 points. With those three pointers Dukate, a product of Ventspils Latvia, set some history. Already the leading sharp-shooter in Huskie history, Dukate now has 245 treys in her Canada West career moving her into third in conference history.
Erin McIntosh was a bright spot for the Dinos, putting up nearly half of the Calgary's offence on her own with 15 points.
The two best defences in the conference went to work early, with the score just 3-1 in favour of Saskatchewan at the mid-way mark of the opening frame. From there the Huskies took over however, ending the quarter on a dominant 14-0 run and jumping out to a 22-4 lead.
It the second quarter it was more of the same, as the Huskies limited Calgary to just six buckets from the floor in the first twenty minutes while keeping the pressure on with 10 points off turnovers.
The third quarter started with the score 37-16 in favour of Saskatchewan and while Calgary chipped away early, the outcome of the second half was a foregone conclusion with Saskatchewan striding away for the comfortable 28-point victory.
Both of these teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon inside the PAC with a scheduled start time of 5 p.m. That action can be watched live on Canada West TV presented by Co-op.
